Marty,
I am lucky enough to be going to Hawaii for Dec. - April and will be taking one of my acoustic electric guitars with me. I have two questions - first the change in humidity from MN to HI will be huge. Should I leave the guitar in the unopened case for a few days to allow it to gradually get used to the high humidity & should I loosen the strings before I travel? My second question is for the poor lonely guitars that I will leave behind. I have a couple hollow body electric, a couple acoustic and a couple of solid body electric guitars. My house temp will be lowered to about 50 degrees when I am gone. I use your great homemade humidifiers in the cases, but being gone so long I am sure the sponges will dry out rather quickly - what to you advise.
Thanks for setting up the forum.

Hi Dave
Being gone for so long is a problem. My case humidifiers will last for several weeks in a unopened case but not for months. You need to get someone to care for the guitars you leave behind. See if your local guitar shop will store your instruments while you are gone, they will probably charge a nominal fee for this. It's worth it, your instruments will be humidified and secure.
As for the guitar you take with you. Make sure it is well humidified before you go, this way there is no big humidity change to worry about. Do not take humidifiers with you, they are useless in Hawaii. Hopefully you will be able to carry the guitar aboard the plane, check with the airline to verify that. If not the guitar will go as baggage, this could be a problem. The best solution here is to purchase a airline proof case, these are getting cheaper these days. The old airline proof cases of the past were $800-1000. You can get a SKB 3i series case for about $300, these are waterproof and pressure equalize during flight, have wheels and TSA approved locks. This type of case will pretty much assure your guitar will get to Hawaii and back in one piece.

Have fun, learn to as much Slack Key as possible and rest assured that everyone in this big deep freeze called Minnesota are envious.
